Bioslices: A practical tool for observing microscopic organisms in the classroom

Biological section is a common observation carrier in biology teaching. The tissue and cells of animals and plants are cut into thin slices by special technology, and then stained, which is easy to observe the microstructure under the microscope. Such as mesophyll cells of plants and epithelial cells of animals can be clearly presented through biological section.

From the perspective of the manufacturing process, the processing of biological slices pays attention to details. Fresh tissue materials should be selected first to avoid cell deterioration. During the sectioning process, the thickness of the section (usually a few microns to tens of microns) is controlled to ensure good light transmittance and easy to observe under the microscope. In the dyeing process, appropriate staining agents will be selected according to the observation requirements. For example, hematoxylin staining is often used to observe the nucleus, so that the nucleus will appear dark and form an obvious contrast with the cytoplasm. Some biological slides were sealed and fixed with cover glass and sealing glue to prolong the storage time of the slides and facilitate repeated use.

In teaching application, biological slides are suitable for various observation needs. When teaching “the structure of cells” in middle school, students can intuitively see the cell wall, nucleus and other structures by observing the slices of onion epidermal cells, and understand the basic composition of cells. In university animal experiments, observing the meiotic section of locust spermatocytes can clearly see the process of chromosome change, which helps to understand the mechanism of germ cell formation. In addition, biological slides can also be used for extracurricular interest group activities, so that students can independently observe different biological tissues and cultivate their interest in exploration.

In daily preservation, the maintenance of biological slides is simple. The slides should be stored in a dry, light-proof box to avoid discoloration of the stain caused by direct sunlight. Handle the slides gently to prevent the cover glass from breaking; If there is dust on the surface of the slice, gently wipe it with a clean soft cloth. This kind of biological slice, which facilitates microscopic observation, makes abstract biological knowledge easy to understand with an intuitive presentation, and becomes a practical tool for biology teaching.
